Tooltip Overrides

📦4.3.16

This feature allows you to customize your tooltips exactly how you’d like to see them.

Accessed via Options -> TazUO Specific -> Tooltips -> Open Tooltip Config

The config window is a Myra window with an overrides list on the left and a detail panel on the right:

  • The toolbar has Export, Import, Refresh, and a red Delete All (with a confirmation prompt). Export copies the current scope’s overrides to the clipboard as JSON; Import reads override JSON from the clipboard and appends it to the current scope.
  • A Scope selector determines which overrides you are editing: Character (the default), Account, Server, or Global. Each scope has its own independent list; when tooltips are processed, rules from all scopes are combined with the most-specific scope (Character) first.
  • Below the toolbar, pick an override from the list. Use Add + to create a new rule, Delete Selected to remove the selected one, and the move up/down buttons to reorder rules (order matters — rules are processed top to bottom).
  • The detail panel edits the selected rule’s matching attribute (search text), replacement, the first/second value min/max ranges, the matching layer, and an optional custom border color — when the rule matches, the tooltip is drawn with a thick border in that hue instead of the normal tooltip border. Click the border color swatch to set/change it, or clear it to go back to the normal tooltip border.

Options -> TazUO Specific -> Tooltips -> Ignore tooltip overrides for mobiles
Enabled by default. When on, mobiles (players/NPCs/pets) show their raw tooltip text instead of override-formatted text, while items are unaffected.

The first text box is the search text, properties containing this text will be replace with the second text box
ℹ️ You can optionally use regex by prefacing your search text with $: $(Bless\b) for example.

The second box can use the following commands:

Section titled “The second box can use the following commands:”
  • /c[red] or /c[#ffffff] to set the color

  • /cd to return to normal color.

  • /n will add a blank line

  • {1} will insert the first number found in the property

  • {2} will insert the second number

  • {3} will insert the original property line

  • 4 and 5 are special, when using item comparisons (press ctrl while hovering over an item in your grid container to compare it to item equipped in that slot) these will be the difference between the values of that property.

  • {4} the difference between the first numbers

  • {5} the difference between the second numbers

The next few boxes are for min and max values (for properties with numbers like Weapon Damage 10 - 15).

The final drop down box is to match specific item layers (If you wanted to set up one Mana increase for armor, and one for jewelry for example)

In this screenshot you can see there are numerical differences on the item in my inventory compared to the item equipped, this is done using the following formatting in tooltip overrides: {0} /c[orange]{1}{4} /cd- /c[red]{2}{5}
Take special note of the {4} and {5}, which in this example are -4 and -3 (each value compared to the equipped item)

ℹ️ The textboxes don’t work very well with long texts, it’s recommended to edit your text outside and paste it into the box if there’s not enough space in the box.

ℹ️ Properties and overrides are processed from top to bottom, so for certain things like Spell Damage Increase and Damage Increase you would want Spell Damage Increase higher on your list than Damage Increase.

ℹ️ If you want to edit properties outside of the game, using the Export button and then using a semi-visual editor such as https://jsoneditoronline.org/ works well.

ℹ️ Certain gumps like Vendor Search do not give the client item serials/data, they only tell the client what images to show and what tooltips to show. For these, overrides are applied directly to that raw tooltip text instead of being looked up by item/layer, so an override with a specific layer set may not match — the ANY layer is the safest choice for these gumps.

ℹ️ Your saved override rules live in their own tooltip_overrides.json file (character scope) plus scope-specific files for the Account/Server/Global scopes. Existing overrides are migrated automatically the first time you load a profile after updating.
